Fair Work Statement

Jointly agreed by Aberdeen Science Centre and its staff association this statement confirms the science centre’s commitment to ensuring fair working practices are in place in support of ‘Fair Work First’.

Fair Work First is the Scottish Government’s flagship policy for driving high quality and fair work across the labour market in Scotland by applying fair work criteria to grants, other funding and contracts being awarded by and across the public sector, where it is relevant to do so. Through this approach, the Scottish Government is asking employers to adopt fair working practices, specifically:

1. Payment of at least the real Living Wage

ASC pays all its staff irrespective of age the Real living wage.

2. Providing appropriate channels for effective workers’ voice, such as trade union recognition

ASC supports the setting up of the ASC Staff Association, which is independent of ASC, and will consult with it to ensure the views and voices of our staff are heard.

3. Investment in workforce development

ASC is fully committed to the development of its staff and workforce. Its work towards and achievement of the Investors in People award will continue to show this commitment.

4. No inappropriate use of zero hours contracts

ASC ceased the use of zero-hours contracts in 2023, replacing them with part-time contracts and associated benefits.

5. Action to tackle the gender pay gap and create a more diverse and inclusive workplace

ASC is committed to tackling the gender pay gap and is working towards creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace.

6. Offer flexible and family friendly working practices for all workers from day one of employment

ASC has always offered flexible working from home and family friendly working options as it recognises that support for its staff in this way will see a more productive and happy workforce.

7. Opposing the use of fire and rehire practices

ASC fully opposes the practice of fire and rehire.
