Hands-on electricity workshops to reach over 600 pupils through renewed partnership

Aberdeen Science Centre is delighted to announce the renewal of its partnership with Dundee Science Centre and SSEN Transmission, continuing a shared commitment to inspiring young people's interest in electricity, engineering and electronics.

First established in 2024 by Aberdeen Science Centre and SSEN Transmission, the Circuits and Electronics Workshop introduces primary school pupils (P2–P7) to the science behind electricity through practical challenges and interactive learning.

‍

Pupils have the opportunity to build electrical circuits, explore different components and discover how electricity is transmitted. The workshops also introduce children to the people and careers involved in keeping our electricity network running, helping them connect classroom learning with real-world applications.

Building on a successful programme

With the support of Dundee Science Centre and The Science Skills Academy, the initiative expanded in 2025, reaching more than 1,000 school pupils across Scotland.

‍

Following this success, Aberdeen Science Centre and Dundee Science Centre will continue delivering the programme throughout 2026 and 2027, both through school visits to the centres and outreach activity in Dundee.

‍

The programme will also extend to Shetland in 2027, when the Aberdeen Science Centre team will undertake a three-day visit to deliver workshops directly to local schools.

Supporting access to STEM education

‍

Through funding from SSEN Transmission, more than 600 pupils across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Dundee, Angus and Shetland will benefit from the workshops, with support covering both workshop delivery and transport to the science centres.

Feedback from last year's programme highlighted its educational value, with 97% of participating children reporting that they had learned something new. Additionally, 89% of teachers felt they had gained new information through the experience.

As an educational charity, partnerships such as this play an important role in helping Aberdeen Science Centre bring engaging STEM experiences to more young people and communities.
